Ports and Harbour Security

The massive growth of shipping around the world and the globalisation of the container business has brought its own security problems and increased threats to Ports and Harbours worldwide.Ports & Harbours

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) issued the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code as an amendment to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention (1974/1988) on minimum security arrangements for ships, ports and government agencies with an effective date of 2004. The Code is a comprehensive set of measures to enhance the security of ships and port facilities, developed in response to the perceived threats to ships and port facilities in the wake of the 9/11 attacks in the United States. All international Ports and Harbours are required to implement the Code.

The threat of terrorist attack on naval bases, harbours, ports, oil platforms, terminals, underwater pipelines, shipping and coastal facilities remains a real and growing concern to all countries.

Terrorist organisations are now training operatives in diving techniques, and the risk of attack on facilities from diver teams is now very real.

Westminster provides a wide range of security and defence solutions which can be deployed to detect and respond to such threats including Radar, Sonar and Anti-Diver Nets, etc. In addition to these measures it is important to be able to provide a means of communication and, if necessary, disruption to any divers detected in the area.

Increased threats to Ports and Harbours around the world also include the trafficking of people, explosives, weapons and narcotics, as well as the risk of theft. Westminster provides a range of Walk-through Metal Detectors, Baggage Scanners, Portal Scanners, Mobile X-Ray Vehicles and Explosives & Narcotics detection to help security personnel deal with these challenges.

The passage of people and vehicles into Ports and Harbours can be regulated using Entry Control solutions such as Turnstiles, Gates, Barriers, Bollards and Rising Vehicle Ramps. Further access to restricted areas can be effectively controlled using a range of Access Control solutions, including cutting-edge I.D. Verification, Biometric Security and Advanced Door Locking Systems, whilst shipping can be monitored by Radar and Long Range Thermal Cameras and Ship Security Alert Systems (SSAS) in accordance with Solas regulations.
