bullet Solar Powered Perimeter Lighting Solutions

Solar Powered Perimeter Lighting Traditionally airports, seaports and border perimeters are illuminated by mains grid powered lighting columns for both safety and security purposes.

These mains grid powered lighting systems require considerable initial investment in the electrical supply infrastructure e.g. mains cabling, high voltage transformers and extensive time consuming civil works.

The required electrical supply capacity must also be readily available.

In many parts of the world in particular in outlying areas the electrical mains grid supply can be subject to infrequent interruptions that could allow serious safety and security breaches to occur un-detected.

Alternative solution

Westminster’s alternative solution to mains grid powered lighting columns is an environmentally friendly, solar powered, low energy perimeter lighting column, offering a high light output specifically designed for perimeter and border illumination.

This simply converts the naturally available energy of the sun and wind into an effective energy electricity source, providing lighting from dusk to dawn.

Applications

  • Airport perimeters;
  • Borders;
  • Remote Industrial areas;
  • Military installations;
  • Oil refineries;
  • Seaport perimeters;
  • Railway facilities;
  • Rural lighting in remote roads and villages.

Features

  • Rapid deployment for temporary or permanent installations;
  • Cost effective;
  • Environmentally friendly, converts the natural energy of sun and wind into electricity;
  • Quick and easy to install minimal ground works required;
  • Does not require any electrical infrastructure mains grid cables and high voltage transformers;
  • Self contained each column works independently of other columns;
  • No on-going electricity costs;
  • Not subject to grid power failures;
  • Simple plug and play electrical connections;
  • System includes solar panel, column, lamp assembly, maintenance free gel battery, wiring harness and wind turbine if required;
  • Light source high intensity leds or 18W triple biax 4 pin tube according to application requirements;
  • Solar panels can be configured to power ancillary equipment e.g. surveillance cameras.

General Specifications

  • A typical installation utilises a 6-metre 76 mm diameter column with the lamp mounted at 5 metres (1 metre underground);
  • Each individual lighting column has a built in dusk to dawn photocell which will automatically switch on the lamp during darkness and off during daylight, these light levels are site specific and are adjusted on installation;
  • The low voltage, low energy high intensity leds or the alternative biax lamp inverter are powered from a sealed lead acid battery located in a gear housing enclosure at the base of the column;
  • The battery is protected from excessive discharge by a low voltage detection circuit built which will prevent the lamp from turning on until the battery voltage has reached a pre-set level of charge capacity;
  • The charge in the battery is maintained by the photovoltaic panel sized according to the capacity requirement and solar energy resource available at the site, it can be supplemented by a wind turbine generator in applications where more charge capacity is required.

Column Specifications

  • Column height: 6 metres (1 metre underground);
  • Lamp height: 5 metres;
  • Column weight: typically 100 kgs;
  • Total weight: typically 124 kgs;

Solution Design

Each specific project will be design engineered by Westminster to provide the required level of illumination, lighting duration and functionality utilising:-

  • Size of solar panels;
  • Led lighting sources;
  • Controllers;
  • Passive infra red detectors;
  • Lighting level sensors;
  • Battery type and amp per hour;
  • CCTV integration.

Border Protection

Border ProtectionA major concern of the majority countries today is the ability to secure their national borders against illegal immigration, smuggling and the infiltration of terrorists. To enable border security systems such as CCTV camera’s and border guards to function efficiently a minimum level of constant lighting must be present throughout the hours of darkness, typically borders are remote from normally available reliable electricity supplies. – Westminster’s solar & wind powered perimeter lighting is the ideal solution.

Airports & Seaports

Airports & SeaportsAirports and Seaports are particularly vulnerable from illegal immigrants and terrorists both externally along perimeters and internally from recently arrived passengers. To enable a reliable level of security to be maintained throughout the hours of darkness all perimeters, airside areas, inner perimeters such as the working ramp area, maintenance facilities, oil storage, aircraft parking areas and VIP aircraft parking require an efficient constant level of lighting to be maintained. - Westminster’s solar & wind powered perimeter lighting systems are the ideal solution.

Military and Industrial Sites

Military & Industrial SitesMilitary and Industrial sites are particularly vulnerable to terrorist, internal sabotage and criminal theft, this may cause loss of life, loss of production and possible environmental damage and pollution through chemical spills etc. To maintain a reliable level of security it is essential that an efficient level of brighter lighting be maintained throughout the hours of darkness.
