bullet Assisted Hearing Systems - Induction Loop & Infra-Red

Service Providers including Businesses, Shops, Restaurants, Public Utilities, Leisure Centres, Sports Stadiums, Places of Worship, Entertainment Establishments, Airports, Railway Stations, Hospitals and the construction industry in general have both a moral and increasingly legal, responsibility to ensure that people with hearing disabilities are not disadvantaged when utilising the facilities and services offered.

Many countries around the world are looking at legislation to ensure that companies and organisations provide proper access to their goods and services for disabled people, of which the hard of hearing are one of the largest groups.

One way of considerably assisting the hard of hearing to fully participate in the activities involved is to provide "a hearing enhancement system" to transmit amplified sound i.e. music, speech, etc. by using an Induction Loop, Infra-Red or Radio Transmission system.

Induction Loops Hearing Assistance:

The induction loop system is a voice amplification system designed to assist hearing-impaired people who use NHS hearing aids. A special Induction Loop cable is run within the building, often above the ceiling or below the floor, which is connected to the audio source (microphone or music amplifier etc.).

By simply switching their hearing aid to the "T" position, the earpiece is able to pick up clear speech signals via a magnetic field transmitted within the room by the Induction loop.

Systems can be designed to cater from one to one applications such as reception counters and ticket offices etc. to large auditoriums and concert halls.

A further advantage is that the sound comes to the user in an undistorted form; regardless of the distance the listener is from the source of the sound.

The Infra-Red systems operates in a similar way to the Induction Loop system but avoids some of the installation and signal leakage problems that can be experienced by induction loops but does require the use of special headset receivers.

The system utilises special infrared transmitter devices, which emit an infrared light signal to special infrared headsets units to give clear undistorted audio reception.

The system can transmit separate channels at the same time e.g. in separate languages, which provides additional flexibility but due to the requirement of specialised headsets an Infra-Red systems is likely to be more expensive than an Induction Loop system.
