An active RFID solution offers many benefits and applications, from site-wide access control, people tracking in real-time through to total asset visibility. Active RFID is being successfully deployed today by organisations to track and manage assets, improve their usage and control, improve security, automate processes and increase productivity.
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is an automatic identification method relying on storing and retrieving data wirelessly from self-powered tags, using Radio Frequency (RF) signals. Tags are affixed to assets and stored information may be written and rewritten to an embedded chip in the tag. Tags are then read remotely via their radio frequency signal by a reader over a range of distances, varying from 3m up to 500m.
Readers send detected tag information over the enterprise network to back-end systems for processing from where it can be displayed to the end user via provided front-end software. The average tag life is estimated at 4.8 years at a transmission time interval of approximately 1.5 seconds.
Tags are assigned to assets, people or alternatively can be embedded into devices. The tags come in various form factors, ranging from IP67 rated industrialized versions for heavy duty use through to personnel tags used for access control and people tracking. Tags can be used on both metallic and non metallic surfaces and can be custom designed to meet specific needs and application. The tags can be configured to accommodate Wiegand numbering for interfacing with access control systems.
There are two ranges of Westminster Active Tags available; 'L-Series' and 'W-Series', which refer to 2 different proprietary communication protocols used between tags and readers. L-Series tags provide ultra long read range and are ideal for use in low tag density (< 30 tags per reader) operations such as personnel tracking, small asset management applications and access control systems. W-Series tags are more dynamic and flexible in the data they can transmit, offer improved data compression capabilities and are ideal for high tag density applications (>30 tags per reader) and provide an ideal platform for applications requiring customisation of the transmitted data.

W/L-TG100
Domino Tag
The TG100 Domino Tag is designed for use on non-metallic assets. The tag can be used with existing access control systems together with an active RFID tracking and management system.
Tag attachment kits are available for the permanent fixing of the tag to assets. The anti-tamper function allows for either the notification of any attempt to remove the tag from the asset or to use this tag to wirelessly communicate door-open events to security systems.
The TG100-MS tag is equipped with a motion sensor to detect the movement of tagged assets and to provide increased asset protection and security for normally stationary assets.
Benefits
- Beacon tag transmitting a unique ID & data at pre-set intervals;
- Low cost, small tag design for non-metallic assets;
- Ultra low power consumption provides exceptional battery life;
- Ultra long range transmitter;
- Low battery warning;
- Anti-tamper alert option;
- Motion sensor option;
- Intrinsic Safety (IS) ratings for various countries;
- Available in L-Series and W-Series versions.
W/L-TG501 Personnel Tag
The TG501 Personnel Tag is designed to be carried by personnel or used on non-metallic assets.
The TG501-MS tag is equipped with a motion sensor to detect the movement of tagged assets and to provide increased asset protection and security for normally stationary assets.
The TG501-IH Enviro Asset Tag is an IP67 rated, low-profile, rugged version of the TG501 tag which is suitable for non-metallic industrial, heavy duty and outdoor assets.
Benefits
- Beacon tag transmitting a unique ID & data at pre-set intervals;
- Low cost, small tag design for non-metallic assets;
- Ultra low power consumption provides exceptional battery life;
- Ultra long range transmitter;
- Low battery warning;
- Anti-tamper alert option;
- Motion sensor option;
- Dual Use option: can incorporate popular Access Control RFID chips;
- Intrinsic Safety (IS) ratings for various countries.
W/L-TG700 Key Fob Tag
The Key Fob tag can be used in applications where door/safe keys need to be tracked or to offer personal alert capabilities when carried by personnel. Institutions such as prisons, hospitals and government institutions would find this a highly useful application of RFID technology.
The Key Fob Tag is also used for personnel tracking and vehicle immobilising / driver identification applications, or long range access control systems. For employees working in dangerous industrial or construction environments such as mining, the tag can also be used as both a tracking device and a distress-signalling device in case of emergency situations.
The Key Fob Active Tag can be set to continually transmit its identifying RF signal at a pre-set time interval or be operated in silent mode, with transmissions only occurring upon the press of the button.
Button-press transactions will be reported immediately when within reader range or logged when out of reader range, and reported immediately when back within reader range.
The transmitted tag data includes Customer Site Code (CSC), Tag ID, Tag Age Counter Value and Button Alarm status. For protection against adverse environmental conditions, the Key Fob Tag is encapsulated in a moulded Nylon case.
W/L-TG801 Small Asset Tag
The WL-TG801 Tag is designed for use in asset tagging applications such as laptops, IT equipment, military equipment, vehicles and transport media. The TG801 is ideally suited for operating on metallic surfaces (or plastics containing a high metal content).
W/L-TG900 Secure Wristband Tag
The TG900 Secure Wristband Tag is ideally suited for locating personnel in high security applications such as prison inmates, security detainees, secured hospital patients, construction workers or other applications where the unauthorised removal of the tag by the wearer is undesirable.
The tag can be worn continuously and does not need to be removed if worn outdoors or for personal ablutions. The wrist strap is integral to the tag, and is fully adjustable to fit all wrist sizes. Tags that require fitment to multiple people during their life span can be refurbished with new straps.
The TG900 continuously transmits a unique ID number and functions primarily for personnel identification and monitoring, offering a typical 1 year life span when operating at the default 1.5s transmission interval. Alternate preset transmission intervals are available; a greater interval will increase the expected lifespan. Battery status is transmitted continuously and can be monitored.
The Wristband tag can also be used with existing access control systems together with the active RFID system.
The tag will transmit a tamper alarm when the wrist strap is cut or otherwise tampered with in order to remove the tag. The tag has a permanent strap locking mechanism. For protection against adverse environmental conditions and for ease of wearing, the tag is encapsulated in a moulded plastic case in the shape of a wrist watch; sealed to IP65 standards.
